Political Worlds, written by Donald E. Blake (professor in the department of political science at the University of British Columbia) with the collaboration of David J. Elkin and Richard Johnston, grew out of a comprehensive research project that surveyed the political attitudes and behaviour of British Columbia voters. Approximately one thousand residents of the province participated in detailed interviews about their political views on both the federal and provincial levels of government. Because of the amount of information collected on each of the participants, the author can place the individual voter in a context and attempt to determine factors (i.e., where he/she lives, what he/she does for a living, level of education, etc.) that will affect voting behaviour. Blake examines the political history of both federal and provincial parties in the province and how the actions of political elites of the past have had implications for the present system of party politics. The economic structure of British Columbia, one that is heavily resource-based, is also taken into consideration. The study thus measures social, economic, and political factors and explains some of the peculiarities in the two political worlds of the province, namely the almost complete separation of federal and provincial party systems and the success of both the Social Credit and NDP in provincial politics. This work would definitely be of interest to the student of political behaviour.
