For those who are not aware that such an association exists, the Canadian Intramural Recreation Association is a national Canadian organization dedicated to the promotion of intramural recreation programs at all levels. Among other services, they maintain a resource centre for the dissemination of instructional brochures, conference papers, and curriculum guidelines. This series of six pamphlets has been supported financially by Fitness and Amateur Sport Canada (the Participation people). It deals with the problems of initiating programs, officiating, promotion, special events, awards, and budgeting. All this information, of course, could have been included in one larger work. A hardcover book would have looked more prestigious on office shelves, but it would undoubtedly have been more expensive to produce. It might also have been less user-friendly for busy physical education instructors who have a habit of stuffing idea notebooks into gym bags or desk drawers.

The author is a director of campus recreation at the University of Windsor. He has written a succinct and well-organized series that should give beginners a good grasp of where to begin. For those with more experience there are useful bibliographies to be found at the end of each pamphlet. The text is mostly in a note format that makes excellent use of type size, bold-face print, and cartoons. This series offers very practical advice that could be useful to teachers in elementary, secondary, or even college programs. It just might be the best $12.00 investment any physical education department could make.
