This short report is the latest successful effort of Statistics Canada to present census and other statistical data to the general public. As with publications such as the current Demographic Analysis series, the authors have provided informative and clearly written background to the income data. The statistics are presented in sections with titles in the form of commonly asked questions about incomes: "How has income changed?" "Which factors affect income?" "What do social benefits contribute to income?" "How do income taxes affect income?" "And what about regional differences?" The report avoids the use of tables of figures in favour of colourful and easily understood graphs and charts.

There is a two-page glossary explaining some of the technical terms used by Statistics Canada, such as "family income" and "income after taxes." For readers who wish to go further by getting access to the detailed statistical publications on incomes over this period, the authors include a complete list of references with Statistics Canada catalogue numbers and details on how to order Statscan publications. Both public and school librarians should consider adding this booklet to their reference section.
