Most people would associate paintings of the West with names such as Remington and Russel. Although not as well known as these two, as a painter Rungius is certainly in the same league. This volume was produced to coincide with a major exhibition of his works at the Glenbow Museum in Calgary. This story of how a young boy from Germany became fascinated with painting and hunting, and ended up spending most of his life painting the scenery and wildlife of the Banff area, is captivating in itself. The excellent colour reproductions of his paintings are an added treat. Rungius's realistic paintings, characterized by the bold use of the brilliant colours of his natural subjects, are excellent studies in composition. This book will be enjoyed by anyone interested in wildlife, hunting, or life in what was known as "the West of North America" at the turn of this century. In a school library it will provide an excellent source of paintings of mountain game animals and associated scenery.
