Volume 14 Number 2
Some of the thirty poems in this collection have been published previously in a number of Canadian periodicals, including Canadian Forum, The Malahat Review, and Queen's Quarterly. In poems like "On My Son's Birthday," Sarah celebrates the details of daily life, reminding us that even the simplest pleasures are truly miraculous. Often she conveys paragraphs in a handful of words: "...moments/before rain, when the length/of the emptying street, heavy/windows gibber shut/in their wooden frames." "Intermezzo in a Minor Key," "Little Prelude," and "C Major Scale, Ascending" would be of particular interest to readers who share Sarah's deep interest in music. A number of other poems, including "Pardon Me," "Anyone Skating on That Middle Ground," and "Tone Row," slide into a tiresome wordiness: "Time seems. And time and time. And seems time passing passing." Although Sarah's poems will appeal mostly to adult readers, many high school libraries would find this well-produced, reasonably priced collection a useful resource for teachers of Canadian literature.
