Collier Macmillan has produced an excellent new series of high-interest / low-vocabulary Canadian readers. The twenty books in the series all come with attractive glossy colour covers, good black-and-white illustrations throughout, and teacher's guides that offer an assortment of suggestions on how to use the books in a formal or informal situation. The teacher's guides are an extra $2.95 each.

The stories are set in a variety of settings, from the hills and plains of Alberta to metropolitan Ontario. The topics range widely, but reflect the problems and interests of the adolescents that these books are designed for. The characters involved in the stories will also be easy for the students to identify with. They include natives, run-aways, jocks, and students who do not necessarily fit in with the main crowd. These are students and people, who through the stories, discover something about their inner selves that makes them better people. Confidence boosting that could certainly rub off on the students these books are designed for; those who are not interested in reading. The conflicts and story lines have been well handled to produce interesting but effective books. The series should prove to be a great success especially in L.A., E.S.L., and S.L.D. situations. The series would be well used in any library but this would destroy the effectiveness of these books for the above classes. The series is definitely recommended for all schools.
