Software Evaluation (French version, Evaluation Des Logiciels), a pamphlet prepared by the Council of Ministers of Education, Canada, represents an attempt to establish a standard format for reviews of educational software. Reviews written in this format are eligible for inclusion in the Database for Educational Software, a collection "intended to provide Canadian educators with a central source of both, descriptive and evaluative information on educational software in both official languages." The pamphlet is very thorough and covers all relevant aspects of educational software. It is, in fact, somewhat rigid, but this kind of structure may be needed in such a new field. It would not be acceptable for book reviewers and certainly will not encourage creative software reviews. Perhaps the pamphlet reflects the uncertainty felt among reviewers of this relatively new medium. Its concern with "objectives" (the word appears on practically every page) is amusingly old fashioned. Schools wishing to obtain a copy should first contact their provincial ministry of education, as they have free copies for distribution.
