Our Brother has Down's Syndrome is a brief photo-story for young children. Told in the words of two sisters, aged approximately nine and eleven, the book describes the life of their small handicapped brother, Jai. Nineteen colour photographs illustrate the short text. There are a few sentences about the cause and nature of Down's Syndrome, an honest admission of Jai's need for much extra attention, his trouble-maker habits and his special limitations. The role of his teacher at the play group he attends is also mentioned, as are the ways each member of the family tries to help him enjoy things "just like other kids." The girls are frank about their resentment of labels like "retarded," and they stress the importance of encouraging their little brother to take part in all the activities they enjoy as a family.

This is a fine book to introduce physical and mental handicaps. The warm, buff-coloured paper, large prim, simple language, and natural photos combine to convey a message of loving support among family members and community workers. As the girls say at the end, "Jai may be a little different (we all have different things about us), but mostly he's just like the rest of us." This title is recommended for purchase by school and public libraries, hospitals, day care centres, social service groups, and private collections.
