This book sets forth the history of organized labour in Manitoba during the past one hundred years. It shows the influences on, and of, the changes in technologies and in ideological views. The focus is on the local scene, but the national and international aspects are not ignored. Major personalities are introduced, and their philosophies and influences outlined . The interaction of unions and politics is traced and their love-hate relationship at various stages shown. The most important strikes are discussed, with causes and results traced.

My first negative reaction to an item in the book was the appearance of the ethnic slogan WASP, since I do not feel that greed and insensitivity are restricted to any particular group. However, only the writer of the introduction used the term. The author has been careful to give the full title of groups introduced, and not to rely totally on acronyms, nor to presume knowledge on the part of the readers. Even at that, the reader may get a bit dizzy as the organizations keep changing (and fighting).

The writing is clear and crisp. The book is thoroughly illustrated with excellent black-and-white reproductions of old and recent photographs. The extensive bibliography, the style, and the story can serve as a guide and an example for other provincial histories of labour development . Highly recommended for high school studies.
