In Search of Your British & Irish Roots, divided geographically and then by type of record, includes information for England, Wales, Scotland, the Isle of Man, and the Channel Islands. A wealth of data is included on the various records helpful for this kind of research: parish registers, civil records, wills, census returns, cemetery records, and many others. Listed also are the addresses of Family History Societies and Surname Societies for each county, or appropriate local area, as well as any other relevant addresses or historical publications that could make the search easier. The division by locality is a particularly useful one, as the researcher is able to focus immediately on the information that will be most helpful in discovering information on a specific ancestor. A bibliography and index are included.

In Search of Your European Roots covers every country in Europe, although not much hope is offered to those Canadians whose ancestors emigrated from countries such as Albania or the Soviet Union. Baxter points out that genealogical research in Europe is more difficult because of its history of wars and disasters, and religious and political turmoil. The fact that records are not centralized, place names have changed, and the arbitrary altering of European names by Canadian immigration officials, all add to the difficulties. For those who want to proceed however, a brief historical outline is provided for each country, followed by lists and descriptions of such sources as church and civil archives, military records, estate and family archives, and emigration records. The names of genealogical organizations are given, as are helpful specialized genealogical publications and glossaries of genealogical terms in the appropriate language. A short bibliography of representative works for each country, a list of North American ethnic genealogical organizations, and an index complete the book. Both books are written in a very readable style that makes all the information provided easily understandable, and both are enlivened by the personal anecdotes from the author's own genealogical searches. Highly recommended for anyone, or any collection, with genealogical interests.
