The name Jean Paré is very well known to thousands of Canadians because of her cook-book series, entitled Company's Coming. Appetizers is the fifth book in this set, previous titles having included: 150 Delicious Squares, Casseroles, Muffins and More, and Salads. Paré operated her own catering business in Vermilion, Alberta, for seventeen years, so was provided with countless opportunities to test new ideas with immediate feedback. Hence her hundreds of delicious recipes.

As the title suggests, this book concentrates on canapes, or starters. A few examples from the index will give an idea of the scope: "Cocktail Sandwiches," "Dips and Sauces," "Finger Food," "Quiche, Eggs And Hot Cheese," and "Spreads and Cheese Balls." An entire meal may be made by using a greater variety and quantity of the appetizers, i.e., for lunch, dinner, or cocktail parties. Appetizers features easy-to-follow recipes, requiring mostly common, affordable ingredients. This, plus full-colour photographs, good quality paper, the use of conventional and metric measurements, the convenient 6x9 inch size, and the plastic lay-flat binding, make it a cookbook I can heartily endorse.
