The teacher's guide that accompanies these stories and poems suggests use of the Abc-dabra reader in grades 2 to 4, or possibly for enrichment in first grade. Lesson notes include dictionary words, discussion questions, and activities to extend the selections, such as illustrating, dramatizing, and/or writing. Attractive and realistic black-and-white pencil drawings accompany the one or two-page selections. Reader and workbook are both typed in large easy-to-read print using 8 1/2 by 11 inch pages. The worksheets include exercises in organizing information, classifying, grouping, and charting: interpreting the story through recalling sequence, analysing actions and/ or happenings; and vocabulary development such as synonyms, antonyms, and rhyming words.

A number of the selections are taken from It's Not Always a Game. * Canadian content includes miscellaneous information about the provinces, the national anthem, and activities that are part of everyday Canadian life. The authors range from children to well-known adults from the English-speaking world. Some selections have no author identified. The content extends from the fairytale and fantastic, to the familiar and poetic, with a mixture of contemporary heroes and fictional characters. The content of the reader will appeal to youngsters in grades 2 and 3 and the accompanying workbook will make the selections usable in many Canadian classrooms.
