Volume 14 Number 1 1986 January Murdo's Story continues Pemmican's commitment to children's books on native topics, and it is one of their best efforts to-date. The story is a Cree legend that tells how the seasons came to be. Murdo Scribe recorded a number of Cree legends when he worked for the Native Education Branch of the Manitoba department of education. This is the first to be published. The story is simply told but with plenty of action to keep young children interested. It explains not only how the seasons came into being but also how the star formation that we call the big dipper came about. The print is large and easy to read. Terry Gallagher's black-and-white illustrations resemble woodcuts and perfectly complement the story. The cover has a glossy finish to repel stickiness. In fact, the only problem with the book is that it has a stapled binding that could give out under many library borrowings. This drawback should not deter anyone from buying it, as the contents, coupled with the reasonable price. make it worthwhile for children across the country. Sharon A.
