Local history can be of interest beyond its own geographic area. While most obviously useful as source material for Ontario's intermediate history courses, Joan Magee's lively and attractively presented study has the possibility to quicken enthusiasm for multicultural study in any area. (Seventeenth-century Finns and Swedes are credited with teaching settlers of other nationalities to construct the log cabins that became the typical pioneer dwelling.) Her success lies in a polished interweaving of the specifics of individual experience within the overall pattern of Scandinavian settlement. Personal narratives heighten, but do not fragment or obscure, the overall design. The total is a clear and fluent account of the history of settlement in the Windsor area from Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, and Iceland. Evaluation of collective and individual cultural influences indicates special contributions in music and folk dance. Magee is librarian and former teacher of Scandinavian studies at the University of Windsor. She has also written Loyalist Mosaic* and A Dutch Heritage. **

Numerous quotations from letters and contemporary accounts are identified in notes. Sources of the abundant photographs are also fully documented. There is an index of proper names and a "selected bibliography." Appendices give pertinent Canadian census data (mostly to 1981, some to 1971).
