Grades 5 and up Reviewed by Fred May Volume 13 Number 6 1985 November This is the latest edition of the atlas more familiar to many under the title The Canadian Oxford School Atlas. There are several features in this volume to justify the title "new." The page has been enlarged to allow the legends on the basic regional maps to be moved to the margins and to allow the use of a small world location outline map. In other cases the extra space has been used for larger and more legible climate graphs than in previous editions, or sets of statistics relevant to the regional map. Total pages of maps and statistics are almost the same as in the previous edition. However, users will find new world maps on such subjects as life expectancy, education, and nutrition. New Canadian material includes metric climate maps, forest fire risk, and the James Bay project. World data is updated to 1983, and the Canadian statistics use the 1981 census. Teachers will find other useful improvements such as the abandoning of the archaic Roman numerals for the pages of statistics, and the inclusion of a cross-section of Canada along the 49th parallel. Unfortunately, the volume retains the gazeteer divided into world and Canadian sections, a division this writer has found more confusing than helpful to many students. The adoption of a soft-cover format should not deter users as a substantial binding was employed by Oxford. For the price, this atlas has much to recommend it for educators and general readers alike.
