Greenwood Volume 13 Number 6 1985 November Gerry Beauchamp developed an interest in the Curtiss P. 36 Mohawk and has published many articles about this aircraft. Research on this subject led to correspondence with the people who flew the Mohawks where they established a name for themselves in World War II, namely the India-Burma theatre. Though virtually unknown in contrast to the much publicized European air war, the Mohawks in the RAF in Burma gave a good account of themselves in escorting aircraft supplying Brigadier Orde Wingate's Chindits, on ground attack and bombing duties, and in tangles with Japanese fighters and bombers. The main narrative of the book is provided by the diary of Squadron Leader A.B. Dunford, QBE, DFC, which tells the story of the Mohawk squadrons and the difficult conditions under which they lived and flew. Excerpts from other pilots' logs and diaries highlight operations and convey the frustration of being the forgotten men of nos. 5, 146, and 155 squadrons of the RAF. The author's research is astonishingly extensive. Appendices complement the text, and cover: letters from India; particulars of squadrons 5, 146, 155, i.e., members, commanding officers' locations, etc; tragedies; triumphs; and four pages of histories of every RAF Mohawk by serial number. Colour schemes and drawings, plus an excellent index and 117 photos, complete this book. Gerry Beauchamp is a charter member of Men of the Mohawk Squadrons Association and is their official historian. He co-authored, with Jean Cuny of France.
