CIP Pre-School-Grade 2 Reviewed by Janice Foster Volume 13 Number 6 1985 November Little Snowshoe is an easy-to-read book, which bases its storyline on the camouflage ability of the snowshoe rabbit. Set in the Arctic, the story unfolds with Little Snowshoe looking for his mother. Against the whiteness of the snow he is continually fooled by other objects that he mistakes for her. Finally, exhausted from his search, he falls asleep to be awakened by his mother who has found him. The simple, bold-faced text, with a fairly controlled vocabulary, is suited for the beginner reader. Whereas the first sentence, "Snow was snowing on the snow," seems overly contrived, the remaining text flows smoothly. The large black-on-white sketches are excellent, and aptly convey Little Snowshoe's difficulty in locating his mother against the arctic background, as well as providing a hide-and-seek game for the young child. This book with its mother-child storyline will appeal to the very young child, and the large illustrations with the bold type will also entice the beginner reader. Besides entertaining, Little Snowshoe also teaches children about the natural protection the colouring of the snowshoe rabbit provides. Unfortunately, the durability of the thin, glossy pages and the folder-type cover are questionable. Recommended. Janice Foster, Winnipeg, Man.
