These two attractive volumes are part of the Kanata: Canadian Studies series. Both provide necessary background and both encourage students to form their own opinions. The first book provides a useful and interesting overview of government in Canada, from early Indian cultures to modern times, and asks the students to consider the issues and to debate alternative plans of action. Maps and photographs are effectively used and provide a personal touch so appealing to elementary students. The bibliography, however, would be more useful if it included books suitable to the age level of the intended audience.

The second book discusses at length the nature and importance of foreign policy, and by use of the case study approach, encourages students to discuss alternative courses of action in such aspects of foreign affairs as defence, foreign aid, foreign investments, and the protection of a distinctive Canadian culture. The authors of the second book should, however, have taken greater care in matters of style and detail: Churchill was not prime minister of Britain in 1946, and Stalin was not Soviet leader in 1955. Notwithstanding these criticisms these books are well suited for their audience and deserve to be widely used. Recommended.
