This inexpensive booklet from the Nova Scotia Museum is an attractive bargain that will be useful in the vertical files of most adult and children's libraries. Clear instructions, supplemented by black-and-white diagrams, explain the cutting and assembling of various simple patchwork designs and variations. Tips are included on quilting and finishing the item. One wonders why the author insists on only using new fabric; surely quilters have always recycled scraps and disgarded garments with great success. Most quilt experts strongly recommend washing of new fabrics before cutting to eliminate problems from shrinkage and colour loss. However, these instructions are omitted here. Nevertheless, this booklet is a worthwhile purchase for any library wanting basic information on this craft. An excellent bibliography is included. Other publications in this Peeper series are also available, all dealing with various aspects of Nova Scotia culture, crafts, and natural history.
