Dennis Lee started a trend. Lois Simmie in Auntie's Knitting a Baby ¹ has successfully followed it, b.p. Nichol has not. This picture book is a reissue that should not have been. The blurb says "is certain to make (children ages 4 to 10) howl with laughter (maybe, but I doubt it) and it is certain to turn them on to poetry." It cannot. There is not a poem in the book. Bad scansion, bad rhythm, bad rhyme, and bad grammar do not make good nonsense. Illustrations by Maureen Paxton are imaginative and somewhat more appealing.
