CIP Grades 7-11 Reviewed by Louise Griffith Volume 13 Number 5 1985 September These three anthologies, revised and enlarged versions of the 1975 editions,* are attractive, illustrated poetry and prose collections intended for the intermediate level, although some grade 11 classes could profitably use Reflections. They contain mostly short but complete stories, poems, and prose selections grouped along rather loosely defined themes. Most selections provide material for a single day's lesson. Many have a somewhat didactic approach illustrating the importance of such virtues as tolerance, kindness, and endurance. The selections have a good deal of variety, including many old favorites such as "Charles" by Shirley Jackson: "Luke Baldwin's Vow" by Morley Callaghan: "The Pied Piper of Hamelin" by Robert Browning: and the "Highwayman" by Alfred Noyes. There are also quite a few Canadian authors represented, such as Margaret Atwood, Robert Service, Alice Munro, Farley Mowat, and Chief Dan George. In addition, the book contains many selections dealing with the problems of teenagers growing up and young people coping with the world, from Tom Sawyer to Richard Cory. Most of the material would be great for some teenagers and classes and very unsuitable for others. From over one hundred selections in each volume, however, the teacher should be able to select poems and stories of interest and value to a specific class. Experienced teachers know that such a selection would have to be made with care and sensitivity. The books themselves are very well printed and should last a long time. The binding is excellent and there are shiny coloured pictures on the covers. These texts contain no critical apparatus or notes or questions for the pupils. Revised teachers' manuals have been prepared containing writing and other activities. If the decision is made to use an anthology for the English program, these three fine books would provide sufficient worthwhile material without the problem of duplication in selections from one year to the next.
