With his sights set on at least five volumes of the Encyclopedia, Joseph R. Smallwood, the "only living Father of Confederation." and former premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, has done it again. Smallwood, now in his eighties, has numerous books on Newfoundland to his credit. This volume is just another example of one man's pride in his home province and his desire to "leave his mark." If the Encyclopedia accomplishes nothing more than a comprehensive, alphabetical recording of the social, political, economic, cultural, religious, and ecological history of the island province, then it most assuredly is a "bright new jewel to enrich our big country's heritage." The twelve hundred topics covered make it difficult to single out any one for discussion. It is sufficient to say that the Encyclopedia is a must for any school or public library since it contains a wealth of research invaluable to students of just about any age. Smallwood and his many researchers have taken a second giant step in reporting Newfoundland and Labrador as it was and is.
