Here is an excellent treatment of "communication as a business tool." After noting the price and the length of the work, a college instructor might well consider it as a choice for a text for a course in communication English. It certainly should be available, probably a number of copies, as a reference tool in all college resource centres.

The author is Ron Blicq, staff member at Red River Community College and senior consultants of the Roning Group. Working in a field where there have been innumerable changes in usage, particularly as we move into the electronic, high-tech age, has been advised by a communications consultant and instructors at another college and two universities.

Basically a study of expository practice, the work itself is an outstanding piece of exposition; from the layout and organization, which demonstrate careful use of headings, italics, spacing, diagrams, charts, etc, to the discussion of theories of communication. The whole treatment follows "the business writer's pyramid." Two fictitious companies have been used throughout for the purpose of showing how organizations that employ modem aids carry on business effectively today.

The book will be useful for the general reader for its section on the business letter and for the information on today's usage. There are also useful sections on report writing of various kinds, on applications, and on writing style. A glossary provides information on the spelling and meanings of words in common use in business.
