Large-print captions explain why each of them cannot use these facilities. For example, "A beaver would gather up all the tooth brushes and build a dam. A beaver couldn't use a toilet either," or, "A chicken would think that the toilet is a nest and sit on it for three days, waiting for something to hatch," and so on. The last page, which shows a child sitting on a toilet, says, "Toilets are meant for big kids like you." Toddlers who are being toilet trained will enjoy the humorous situations and the clear, colourful illustrations. The simplicity of both the words and the pictures are well suited to the intended audience. The animals are all familiar ones to most young children, but the large shark fin seen rising from the toilet bowl will need explaining. It may also cause some youngsters to fear using the toilet and thus defeat the purpose of the book.
