Sepia is the chosen colour for this book; for print, maps, diagrams, and photographs. Combined with fine artistic editing and display, the result visually is a thinking person's coffee-table book. The format is large for a paperback, 12 x 9 inches, appropriate units for a bygone era, so it does leave room for the coffee impedimentia.

Inside is a positive mine of information, and this reviewer finds it hard to choose between the amount of history presented and the fine illustrations. There are excellent period photographs and drawings, detailed maps, and titillating letters and bills. In short, an antiquarian's paradise.

The authors have taken a small group of buildings and traced their history through the last 150 years to their continuing use in the community. In a sense, this study is a prototype for enthusiasts in every settlement whose history is represented in its buildings.

Examples of the architectural styles the first generation of Canadian architects are discussed. The heavyweights of Canadian history are also present in men like Strachan, Baldwin, and Mackenzie. Part of the history of these buildings has been their restoration, and its steps are chronicled and depicted photographically.

Every page is illustrated, and the use of sepia tone throughout fosters a feeling of unity and constancy, no jarring of modern colour photography against century-old grey/white prints. A very satisfying and unique book that has been greatly expanded and carefully revised over two previous versions dealing with fewer buildings. Highly recommended for the general reader.
