A major consideration to be made when buying a home computer is the degree to which it is "user friendly." This same concern ought to be paramount when considering the purchase of a student dictionary. The Globe Modem Dictionary (GMD) meets that requirement admirably.

First, the GMD's compact size (approx. 11 x 18 x 3.5cm) and sturdy binding make it easy to carry from class to class and home, yet it contains roughly twenty-five thousand entries, making it a substantial lexicon. Secondly, the layout of the pages is excellent. Each headword is clearly emphasized in boldface, and, when a word has several related but independent meanings, these meanings are numbered and entered on a new line. Abbreviations are avoided, and, instead of phonetic symbols, the pronunciation guide uses familiar language sounds. Both American and Canadian spellings of words are given when appropriate, and meanings are given a North American perspective. The vocabulary used in the definitions is as simple and direct as possible. Other features include word family information and etymolgy where it can be useful and enlightening. These are twenty-three pages of useful appendices covering geographic, political, and climatic information. There is even a chart on the gestation and longevity of mammals.

A very informative, fifty-six page teacher's guide is available. It not only provides general information about the features and use of the GMD, but also has forty-five dictionary skill blackline masters that are freely reproducible. These skills activities range from the functionally practical to the just-for-fun variety, but all of them will encourage (force) students to use their GMD's to complete them. Full answer keys to the exercises are provided. Both the GMD and the teacher's guide are highly recommended.
