Ron Nelson has compiled a long series of personal fishing stories that will appeal to the committed fisherman/woman. Those with only a casual interest in the sport will find the esoteric descriptions of lures, strategies, and secret spots of little consequence. The west coast venue determines the terrain and types of fish, mainly varieties of salmon, but the incidents themselves could just as easily occur in any province or state with a similar environment. There appears little organization to the tales, other than a rough seasonal division. Nelson works hard to produce a laid-back, folksy style, but in so doing risks boring his reader, as exciting episodes are few and far between. The stories may work well as individual columns, but their essential similarity soon leaves the reader cheering for the fish.
