Eric Wilson has chosen a timely topic, child abduction, for this mystery set in British Columbia's beautiful Kootenay Valley.

The setting is adequately described, but conversation is, as usual in this series, stilted and inconsistent. Also as usual, the characters are one-dimensional, but they do have the dubious distinction of being slightly more believable than those of Ghost Of Lunenberg Manor ¹.

The fast pace throughout the book, contrived as it might seem to an adult, will probably keep the attention of young readers who may overlook the improbable coincidences and poor characterization. The consequences of children accepting rides or anything else offered by strangers is well treated, which is a plus. There are so many better-written Canadian children's books available, that this one should be bought only after the others are acquired.
