This is a gentle poem to warm one's heart. It tells of a mother cow, with the unlikely name of Buttercup, taking care of her new baby calf. The calf likes his mother to lick him and provide him with milk. By the end of the poem, the calf has learned to walk, run, and play, and to eat hay and grain, and has grown fat.

The illustrator has added frosting to the poem. Barbara Reid has used the medium of colourful pasticine to make pictures in relief. All the details are there to show spring, summer, and autumn on a farm. The blossoms on the fruit trees change into apples. The farmer plows in the spring and harvests in the fall. The full-page illustrations are rich in detail and full of humour and love, all made from plasticine magically transformed with patience and creativity.
