Brimful of photos, cartoons, newspaper articles, language exercises, writing assignments, biographical information, and critical commentaries from 1949 to 1984.

Nineteen Eighty-Four is a treasure trove for the classroom English teacher. It will enrich any investigation into Orwell's important satirical novel.

Like the other books in the World of the Novel series, this guide invites students to explore and develop many different creative approaches in writing, drama, music, art, debate, and research. It can be read individually, or in a group, in whole or in part. Its stated purpose to teach "the skills for making informed choices in a world that increasingly makes choices for you" is admirably fulfilled.

This magazine-style booklet is divided into eight broad sections: "Times and Places," "Imagery and Symbolism," "People," "Structure," "Explorations," "Language," "The Author," and "Criticism and Reviews," each chapter consists of smaller, more specific areas of inquiry. The numerous problems and exercises are both challenging and interesting. In my opinion, the chapter dealing with language in Nineteen Eighty-Four is alone worth the price of the book.

Nineteen Eighty-Four deserves high praise. Let us hope that Prentice-Hall extends this excellent series.
