Ten original essays by a distinguished group of contributors are assembled by the editors for a single purpose: to introduce the major characteristics of Alberta's economic geography to a wide audience. The concept of spatial organization of economic activity is developed through the basic idea that all people in all places practice some form of economic activity.

This is facilitated through a discussion that focusses on three major themes: people, time and space; environment, land and resources; and the industrial-urban economy. The essays are arranged as individual chapters, each supporting one of the three major divisions. Each of the three major divisions and individual chapters are preceded by a clear, succinct overview of the following material that certainly assists the reader. As well, excellent suggestions for further reading follow each chapter, allowing readers to investigate further if they wish.

The authors are true to their claim that technical language has been kept to a minimum and special terms have been defined. The many maps, tables, and cartographic representations provide clear, simple explanations of the text.

Many current examples, similar to the discussion of Pacific Western Airlines in the chapter "Transportation and Communications," show the information to be up to date.

Although this book would make an excellent text for survey courses at the college or university level, it would also provide informative reading for adults interested in another perspective of the province of Alberta.
