This concise survey is the result of a wider effort to research the Battle of the Ristigouche, and develop the Battle of the Ristigouche National Historical Park. There was extensive co-operation in this venture by Parks Canada and the Canadian Government Publishing Centre.

Proulx's purpose is to give the reader a glimpse of life aboard the vessels that sailed the North Atlantic during the French Colonial effort in North America. He analyses four major aspects of these transatlantic voyages: "Maritime Traffic and Outfit of Vessels," "The Atlantic Course," "The People and Their Occupations." and "Life Aboard Ship." Each of these topics embraces a complete chapter. A list of the thirty-five illustrations, many of which are in brilliant colour, precedes the first chapter. The conclusion is very sketchy. The twelve appendices provide the reader with practical examples of life aboard ship, including extensive tables of the names of ships, captains, construction of ships, notations taken from the ships' logs, etc. Fourteen pages of footnotes provide a summary of Proulx's source material. The major bulk of the bibliography relate to references written in French, except for eight listings in English. An index of tables and names conclude the volume.

The wide margins and clear type make reading enjoyable. Proulx's listings of the size, weight, and cargo of the ships becomes tedious at times. However, this is offset by his vivid description of how the sailors and passengers spent their long and arduous voyages together. One is amazed by the physical and psychological courage of these people during the early years of Canada's birth. Proulx's research is worthy of attention. It should prove useful in courses in Canadian history.
