This tiny paperback might have succeeded as a stocking-stuffer for the young hockey fan, if Christmas came in early fall. The major portion of the book concerns itself with overly-enthusiastic team-by-team previews of the 1984-85 NHL season. Unfortunately McFarlane's predictions seem out-dated, if not ludicrous, at this present writing, with the season barely half-complete. He talks of Darryl Sittler's possible contributions to Philadelphia's cause. His trade to Detroit occurred after the publication date and, ironically, of the coming resurgence of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The rah-rah writing style, "Tony Tanti, He's Terrific," will limit this volume's appeal to the uncritical fan under twelve. The abbreviated statistical section contains several misprints and ignores entirely the important contributions of the goal-tenders.

If this effort represented the premiere of a new TV series, the viewer would anticipate a mid-season cancellation, with little interest in the re-runs. Recommended, with some reluctance.
