Numerous prizes have been given to this charming book whose naive illustrations have a particular charm as a picture of a child's view of the prairies. Children who read it with me, however, had these comments to make: they felt that it would be fun to receive as a gift, because the pictures are charming and yet old-fashioned, they also enjoyed finding out about life in the Prairies but felt that the combination of stories was difficult to enjoy as they had a limited continuity. Overall, they enjoyed sharing it with others because the illustrations were interesting to discuss.

It is wonderful to see the work of a great Canadian painter in the pages of a children's book. But for many children, the lack of adventure and momentum leave it as a lovely series of tales that hold a minimal recurring interest.
