A Boy Called Nam, the epic true story of the journey of one small Vietnamese boy from his farming village in North Vietnam to a new life in Canada, will move readers of all ages. Intolerable conditions in his homeland convinced Nam Sinh Chan to spend his life's savings to attempt to send the two eldest of his seven children out of the country to safety.

Of the several hundred passengers aboard a rotting hulk that endures a pirate attack and fierce monsoons, only Nam survives a three-day typhoon. Leo Heaps, a masterful story-teller with eight books to his credit, enthralls the reader as Nam's story unfolds: his rescue by a fisherman, the care he receives from the priests on the tiny Portuguese colony of Macao, his meeting with the author, his journey to Canada, his first lonely and unhappy months with a refugee family, and his final, happy home with the author's daughter and son-in-law.

This remarkable, true account, simply and powerfully told, is highly recommended for all ages.
