Approximately five years ago Roch Carrier's The Hockey Sweater was published, in both French and English. Then, in 1980, Sheldon Cohen turned the story into an animated film for the National Film Board. Now we have the culmination of these two, with this illustrated version of the popular tale.

For those unfamiliar with the tale, it's the story of a young Montréal Canadiens fan whose sweater wears out, and he is sent a Maple Leafs sweater by mistake. The story is both warm and humorous and any child who has ever idolized a team or had a sports hero will be able to empathize with the young hockey player in this story.

Sheldon Cohen has done a superb job with the illustrations. They are colourful and detailed. The only limiting feature of the book is if a child is not familiar with hockey teams or Maurice Richard, then some of the impact of the story will be lost.

A recommended purchase for public libraries and elementary school libraries, available in both French and English.
