These four issues are the descendants of what was once (to use the editor's own words) a folksy little newsletter. They are beautifully and professionally produced, written and illustrated by experts. They are also the product of private enterprise. The magazine, once published by the B.C. government, is now private and so is free to take an informed and impartial stand on many issues dear to the hearts of westerners. Thus, the Summer 1984 issue on wolf-killing is both interesting and valuable; after the media nonsense of the last year, it is refreshing to read an intelligent coverage of the subject that allows the reader to make up his or her own mind.

Though Wildlife Review is, of course, of most interest to people living in the pacific Northwest and Alberta, its wide range of subject matter, from the inhabitants of cat-tails, marshes, to the perils of poaching, should have a national appeal. The magazine abounds in four colour photos and charming pen and ink drawings.

Though not specifically for children, most of the articles could be read by interested ten year olds. Variety in format is provided by an insert, "Environment Almanac," which publishes environmental items, letters, reviews and other brief items of interest. Reports of conferences and meetings, wildlife trivia quizzes and photo contests inform and enliven. This is a bargain at less than $2 an issue, and should be in every school and public library in Canada. Schools might consider "class set" acquisitions.
