Both Brown and Senior are historians of note, and their thorough research has resulted in yet another book to celebrate the bicentenary of the arrival of the Loyalists.

The Loyalists were losers, but they refused to drop out of history. They have become victorious in defeat, in spite of exaggerated claims by their descendants, links with the Family Compact, antipathy of later immigrants and widespread sympathy for the American Revolution. Their migration to Canada made possible the formation of a second state in North America. French Canadian culture survived because of Britain's commitment to maintaining the new colony. Reflecting all shades of political opinion, they helped shape the country's institutions and gave Canada a distinct political tradition. Their history adds colour to contemporary life, through pageantry, genealogy and historical societies.

The colourful illustration on the dust jacket whets the reader's appetite, but the four glossy sheets of small gray pictures all chunked together in the middle of the book without regard for context are a disappointment. The text is well written, and the print is very good, but more visual material would be welcome. The bibliography and index are excellent. This is a successful and readable book.
