CIP All Ages Reviewed by Bessie Condos Egan Volume 13 Number 2 1985 March Fowke, a renowned Canadian folklorist, has created a collection of ninety folk songs that capture the essence of Canada's history. The work, which is an expanded version of an earlier work Canada's Story In Song (1960), attempts to present songs that most clearly reflect some aspect of national development. Songs include melody line, lyrics, and guitar chords and are chronologically arranged, beginning with Indian and Inuit melodies and continuing through the 1920s. Works are grouped into sixteen sections, and each song is preceded by textual notes, which provide historical background of the song and are intended to provide a framework rather than a comprehensive history. Most of the songs are folk songs; songs composed and sung by ordinary people and transmitted by the oral tradition from generation to generation, although there are some songs by known poets and songwriters. Also included is a bibliography, a record list, which consists of records that contain some of the songs included in the book, a subject index, and a title index.
