Reverend Francis Bolger, author of Prince Edward Island and Confederation 1863-1873 (St. Dunstan's University Press, 1964) and The Years Before Anne (P.E.I. Heritage Foundation, 1974), is eminently qualified to supply the text for this pictorial overview of the Island, past and present. Wayne Barrett and Anne MacKay, authors of Prince Edward Island (Oxford, 1977), with Edith Robinson, and Spirit of Place: Lucy Maud Montgomery and Prince Edward Island, * with Bolger, are equally qualified to supply the eighty-nine splendid colour photos, which complement the informative text. Together, this "holy trio" has produced an intellectually and aesthetically appealing artifact. The title, Memories of the Old Home Place, is taken from a quilt designed by an Islander, Ruth Paynter, and, like a quilt, the book presents the variety of activities that makes up Island society. Besides Father Bolger's usual "history lesson" in the "Introduction," the text covers such Island industries as dairy farming, fishing, fox farming and potato growing; such social events as The Egmont Bay and Mont Carmel Agricultural Exhibition, horse racing at Old Home Week, Women and a production of Anne of Green Gables; and such Historic Sites as Province House, Dalvay-By-The-Sea, and Yeo House, Green Park. There are pictures of beaches and lighthouses and stories of piping plovers and shipwrecks. The facts are accurate, the text is highly readable, and the photos are sharp and delightful. The paper is top-quality, and the high gloss finish brings out the best of the beautiful blues, reds, and greens which make the island the Island. This is far more than another coffee-table item, and I heartily recommend it for both personal and academic consideration.
