Hammel Volume 13 Number 1 1985 January This directory of consultants includes "both people who advise on the solutions to problems and people who carry out work—the same sort of work that full-time employees perform—but on a temporary, contract basis." It is directed to Canadian librarians who wish to find "experts who can assist them with their work" and to anyone who needs library-related services: business people, associations, government departments, publishers, and others who require the establishment of in-house information services or the provision of facts, statistics, pictures or articles on an ad hoc basis. One hundred and thirty-nine entries are arranged alphabetically, with serial numbers. The great majority of the consultants are located in Toronto and Ontario, while approximately one-third are from the rest of Canada and there are no entries from Newfoundland, Prince Edward Island or the Northwest Territories. For each entry there is extensive information: personal name or corporate title, business address, contact person, home address, present position, consulting specialties, experience, career history, education, language proficiencies, publications, professional association memberships, basis on which services are offered, availability of services, willingness to travel. The indexing function is well-served by three indexes: the Geographic Index lists entries alphabetically by province and city; the Language Index indexes languages other than English in which services are offered (some twenty languages, of which French is the most extensive, are included); and the Subject Index lists subjects and subdivisions in alphabetical arrangement. Included as entries are the nature of the services, corporate names when the main entry is personal and personal names when the main entry is corporate. In each index reference is to the serial number of the entry. Except for a very limited version prepared by the editor for the Metropolitan Toronto Library Board in 1976, this is the first Canadian directory of library-oriented consulting services. It is intended that this edition will be followed, initially by bi-annual versions, and ultimately by annual versions. To this end, this directory includes a profile form and instructions, and the editor invites those presently not included to complete the form and forward it for inclusion in the next edition. As with so many new Canadian reference works, so it is with this book: one feels the need to say "it's about time someone did something." It is an excellent beginning to a needed service that can provide extensive information about consulting services. School jurisdictions may find assistance with the planning of library facilities, the development of school library programs, the evaluation of school library services, and the professional development of both teachers and teacher-librarians.
