Because the music industry is a complex structure, young musicians need some encouragement, caution and explanation before embarking on a career in music. This book delivers what it set out to do. From the title through sixteen chapters of candid writing, it describes the industry and a musician's place in it.

The book has a three-page table of contents describing the many subsections of each chapter. The chapter titles themselves encourage our desire to read more, and include titles such as "Preparing for a Music Career," "Forming a Group," "Performing Rights," "Agents and Publishers," "Promotion and Publicity," "Making Demos," "Career Options" and "Taking Care of Business."

It is enjoyable and informative to learn how big and intricate the musician's world can be. Music is a business, and only those with intelligence and talent are going to succeed. But there is room for many people, and this book delineates the planning and the process, the pitfalls as well as the pleasures of being a professional musician.

The book is written in a concise and frank style that allows both quick reading and handy reference. It is well bound with a four-page appendix of recommended reading material and addresses of music societies and associations. This book is recommended for all high-school libraries and music rooms.
