Braun and Braun Educational Enterprises are becoming known for their commitment to publishing resource materials for parents and teachers who want to foster literacy in young children in an integrated, whole-language manner. Language Experiences With Children's Stories is a reading and oral language development program for beginners based upon six familiar nursery stories re-written in rebus form; that is, key words and phrases in the story are signalled by pictures. The pictographic feature of the stories makes it easier for children to learn to read, since pictures provide immediate visual cues to meaning. The main manual contains the rebus stories in large enough print and picture format that it can be used in a small group setting. As well, the manual contains carefully conceived and presented pre-reading, instructional and extension activities, all keyed to the theme of the individual stories. Like its companion volume, First Steps to Reading,* the manual is a complete resource, including appropriate sizes of reproducible patterns for word and picture strips, charts, games and illustrations. A bibliography of relevant children's trade books is included with each unit.

The activities for each story unit are carefully laid out and described and are plentiful and variegated enough to allow for teacher selection and student individualization. The emphasis in the activities is on providing a solid oral language base upon which to build reading and writing skills. Special, highlighted sections provide skill development suggestions for children with learning problems.

In addition to the comprehensive manual, My Once Upon a Time Book makes the six rebus stories available in booklet form for individual children.

Highly recommended for parents of pre-schoolers, early childhood educators, and K-l teachers and children.
