Peter Goddard, rock and jazz critic for The Toronto Star, does it again in his excellent book Michael Jackson & The Jacksons: Lire On Tour In '84. Goddard has previously scored well with a compelling combination of newsy reports and facts in other accounts of rock concerts and stars. The prologue reminds readers that we have been there before, when Sinatra and the Beatles captured the souls of throngs of fans in 1944 and 1964, respectively.

Michael Jackson excels as a media star and dancer. The concerts are pure Hollywood. The text describes facts about costumes, audience size, songs and fan reaction throughout the tour. Jackson devotees will love the information about the family history. While the text is well written, the highlight of the book for many will be the exceptional glossy photos by Philip Kamin, internationally noted for outstanding work in a variety of books and album covers. There are close-ups of Michael Jackson as well as shots of him on stage with other performers. The lighting technique is extremely dramatic. For contrast, a few pictures are in black and white. Michael Jackson fans young and old will feel this book is a necessity.
