Payzant Volume 13 Number 1 1985 January Well-known Canadian writer Harry Bruce's latest book, Each Moment as It Flies, is a collection of his best articles, originally published in a number of Canadian periodicals. Bruce has fastened on each moment as it occurred, examined it delicately as though it were a fragile butterfly, and then let it free, passing on to the next one to catch his attention. Readers who have enjoyed his writing in their favourite magazine will be happy to have access to articles they have missed in others. The subjects are wide-ranging and so are the moods in which they are written, but even the author's most jaundiced look at politics or at the phoniness of New Year's Eve celebrations bear Harry Bruce's signature-a talent for expressing penetrating, sometimes unorthodox views in a jaunty, free-flowing style. Intriguing titles such as "Labour Day Is a Dreaded Bell in the Schoolyard of the Mind," "Maybe There's a Secret Only Maritimers Know," or "The Most Competitive Man I've Ever Known" (Peter Gzowski), lure the reader on and on. Each Moment as It Flies is an ideal book for bedtime reading. Although it is perfectly suitable for high school students, it probably has widest appeal for adults for its nostalgic qualities. Joan M.
