Gary Valcour's first novel involves a mutilated body, a daughter searching for her father, and a lawyer who turns detective. The small town setting contributes an interesting assortment of characters, such as the stolid police chief, the wronged wife, the embittered ex-con, and the little old lady who knows all and records it.

Valcour does his job well, leading the reader in one direction, then another, as the crime is unravelled and solved. The story line is well laid out, with several surprises, a few false leads and a nice twist at the end. In short, an enjoyable mystery.
