Captain J. Allan Snowie's account of the Highland Fusiliers of Canada at the Battle of Buron, succeeds in conveying the grit, emotion and comradeship of this event, a part of the larger Normandy campaign. The book moves nicely from the nineteenth-century beginnings of this Waterloo County Battalion to the actions of July 8, 1944 and ultimately to the war's end. Beginning with the large picture of Europe, the book closes in on one day and one Canadian battalion at a French village. The bulk of the book concerns itself with that day at Buron. Snowie has constructed a readable and detailed account, using interviews with veterans of the battle. The fears and anxieties of the soldiers come through vividly in their own words. References and the bibliography in the book are adequate, and the inclusion of a military glossary is particularly helpful. All too often, books of this type lose their impact because of insufficient explanations of the terminology. Photographs and maps are well linked to the prose. Some other nice touches are the inclusion of regimental photos inside the front and back covers and a complete listing of all participants and their fate. Despite the narrowness of the topic, this is a valuable addition to Canadian war history. It fills a small part of the gap to which Granatstein and Morion refer in Bloody Victory* as "the saddest gap in the Canadian record of the Normandy campaign. . .the relative absence of personal memoir." The book is not difficult to read, and 1 think students from grades 9 and up could gain much from it. I would recommend it for all libraries.
