This book, part of the Native Peoples series, has a format which makes the history of native peoples interesting. It starts off in story form: an Ojibwa girl comes home from school and tells her parents that she has decided to do a project on the Algonkian Indians for her social studies class. The rest of the volume is presumably her project.

The book is divided into three main sections: "Long, long ago," "After the Europeans came" and the ''Algonkian people today" contain subsections within each of them. The printing is large enough and well spaced so that young students will not be intimidated by the amount of reading they have to do. The illustrations, drawings, and photographs are clear and well related to the text. There is a glossary at the back plus a section called "Thinking and doing" that suggests sample questions and projects for the students.

What I like especially about this book is that there are definitions of words on the right hand margin of each page, directly in line with the word itself as it appears in the text. The student does not have to flip constantly back and forth to the glossary. The section on the Algonkian people today is a necessary addition that will help the student keep the study of native peoples in perspective. It provides a continuum; otherwise, the student might not make the connection between the plight of native peoples that makes today's news and the colourful personages of yesteryear with their quaint tools and equipment.

I would strongly recommend that this book be part of the library collection on native peoples for elementary and senior elementary schools.
