The title of this catalogue is something of a misnomer. Although it includes important work by one of Canada's most illustrative artists, Alberta Rhythm is much more concerned with the Northwest Territories, as seen through the eyes of A.Y. Jackson. Much of the last half of Jackson's life was spent in the west and in the far north of that west. The work he produced in the forties and fifties as a consequence of blood and barter (he had a brother in Lethbridge and a patron in Yellowknife) ranks among his best. These tight, contained compositions, perhaps influenced more than Jackson knew by his work in the Laurentian Shield, nonetheless remain some of the most haunting evocations of the sweep of the north ever recorded. Dennis Reid's text is chatty, occasionally clumsy, always informative. When one wishes for more amplitude, particularly in illustration, it is worth remembering that this is an exhibition catalogue. It has a very handsome cover.
