No one was his equal in running, paddling, swimming, river driving, keeping peace among the toughest shantymen, or crushing the Windigo. This account recalls so many people, places and events of Ottawa Valley history that even though it can be read aloud in sixteen minutes, the reader is likely to set a slower pace in order to savour fact and fiction merging into legend. It is a book of words and style, a literary gem, filled with humour and charm. An earlier version appeared three years ago, published by Fiddlehead Poetry Books. A historical account of Montferrand's life appeared in Giants of Canada's Ottawa Valley (General Store, 1981) by the same author. Joan Finnigan knows the Ottawa Valley as few others do. She has written six books about it, and a year ago she received the Philemon Wright award for her historical research and writing on western Québec. More than sixty pencil drawings by Richard Pelham link childlike imagination and historical reality.
